In a recently published editorial here at simplyjimmyd.com, a well-known Luke Ford columnist, Wanker Wang, was erroneously refered to as a 'gook.'
The staff of this site publicly apologizes to Mr. Wang for this typographical error. The derogatory, racial slur, 'gook,' was inadvertantly placed in the article when a data entry employee mistakenly pressed the 'o' key twice, instead of pressing the 'e' key twice, as was intended in the article.
The staff of simplyjimmyd.com does not believe in the use of racial slurs in its columns and/or articles, except where warranted by circumstances deemed appropriate by senior, editorial management.
In the article in question, the columnist intended to refer to Mr. Wang as a 'geek,' not a 'gook.' The word 'geek' was, of course, intended to be used to refer to Mr. Wang's expertise, and employment, as a computer/internet professional; a vocation he shares with a great number of his Asian brethren. While the term 'geek' might be thought to be somewhat derogatory in certain social, academic, or professional applications, it cuts across racial and ethnic boundaries in an unbias and non-prejudicial manner. When we consider the obvious fact that so many Asian Pacific Americans so easily qualify as 'geeks,' it becomes clear how an innocent and unintended mistake such as this could have taken place.
According to the book, "Asian Pacific Americans: A Handbook on How to Cover and Portray Our Nation's Fastest Growing Minority Group," distributed by The National Conference of Christians and Jews, in Los Angeles, CA, the term 'gook' is defined as the following:
"Gook (racial slur) --- A derogatory term for Asian Pacifics, widely used by American GIs during the Korean War and again during the Vietnam War. Thought to be a corruption of "Hankook," or Korea."
As a sidenote, the management of this site would like Mr. Wang to know that if a racial slur had been intended for use in describing Mr. Wang and/or his activities, the term 'gook' would most likely not have been used, and instead, the term 'Yellow Peril' would have instead been placed in the article in question.
The same handbook as referenced above defines the term 'Yellow Peril' as follows:
"Yellow Peril --- Used to describe Asian Pacific Americans as a great threat to Western Civilization. The term gained appeal in the1880s, used by some newspapers and politicians to whip up racism against Asian Pacific immigrants, who were portrayed as taking jobs from whites or were poised to invade the United States."
The staff here at simplyjimmyd is confident that both Mr. Wang, as well as our valued readers, would all agree that 'Yellow Peril' would have been a more appropriate term should this site have intended a racial slur to have been used in describing Mr. Wang, which of course, it did not.
Thank you all for your kind understanding and tolerance.
