THE RUSH SCREENING: TO GO OR NOT TO GO
_POSTEDON 2002-09-04 18:33:11 by jimmyd

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Adella, over at Digital Playground, has extended me an invitation to the "Rush" screening. And truthfully, I don't know what the fuck to do.

The last time I attended something like this, it was the big screening party Sin City had for Buck Adams' "Nightclub," an earlier and equally ambitious porno. But that decision was relatively easy. I was the film's editor (and it was genuinely a film--some of it even shot with a 65mm camera). Plus I was a Sin City employee. And even more importantly, the party's planner and organizer was Gigi Appleton-- now the CEO of Avalon Enterprises, but back then the National Sales Manager for Sin City and one of my best friends (still is). Gigi would have castrated me if I didn't go! And trust me, Gigi might actually be capable of committing castration given the appropriate circumstances! I should point out, however, that I don't think she's in any way related to that castrating Wang guy back in Michigan I reported on recently, even if Michigan is one of the Great Lakes states and isn't too far from Wisconsin, another Great Lakes state famous for snow, cheese, and Scandinavian-extracted dairy farmers who speak like the characters in the movie "Fargo," which coincidentally, is also the state where Ms. Appleton--an extracted Scandinavian herself, minus the dairy cows--hails from. (How's that for an absurdly long, run-on sentence?)

I'm getting off-track-- Back to my problem deciding whether or not to attend the "Rush" screening.

First off, I don't get out much. It's not that I'm shy or inhibited about things like this, I just don't get out much. So decisions like this are always tough for me. So much for the wild, crazy, swinging life of a porn director, huh. Sorry if I burst any bubbles out there amongst my non-industry readers.

Then there's this little problem-- I don't know where they're holding this bash. It seems you have to RSVP with a 'yes' to find out where the event takes place. So I'm thinking, shit, they're probably having it somewhere further than I really want to drive. But I don't know that for sure. This means I have to say 'yes' to find out where, and once I say 'yes,' I feel like I'm committed. I know some of you are thinking this is no problem-- just RSVP 'yes,' JimmyD, and if you don't want to travel that far, fuck 'em, don't go. But my Mother didn't raise me that way. Once I say 'yes,' I'll feel obligated to go.

There's also the minor issue of me already taking down this movie a few notches on my site recently. I still stand behind what I said, but that doesn't mean I want to talk about my opinion with the very same people who invested an awful lot of time and money into this thing. I certainly admire them for their determination in making something as ambitious looking as "Rush," but I still think they might have wasted all that time and money because they might have made a product without an existing market, at least a market I'm aware of. And I doubt if they'll hand out remote controls to the audience so we can fast-forward through the movie. Damn, I can't even sit through movies *I've* made!

So what to do? To go or not to go? That is surely the question. I certainly don't mind partaking of the free drinks and grub, but then what if there isn't a convenient door I can easily slip out of unnoticed as the screening begins? And if I don't stay and watch the movie, what am I going to write about? The drinks and grub? The conversations I was in? And what if I get stuck in a corner with Luke Ford? He's a social misfit and I'll end up being classified the same way! People will be saying, "Oh, that JimmyD, he's got a big mouth when it's just him and his website, but put him out there in public and he acts retarded!"

Listen, if anyone out there has some good advice, please don't hesitate to email me with it. I'm in a genuine quandary here.
