A REAL JOURNALIST'S TAKE ON THE PRIMETIME PORN-U-MENTARY

 jimmyd _writes "Cali Ruchala, my favorite Serbian-born, real-life journalist (actually, the only Serbian-born, real-life journalist I know), shares his views on the ABC/Diane Sawyer porn-u-mentary.
Cali (posting on the Jizz Bizz Message Board) writes: "I saw the show on tape at our office today. They nearly fell over themselves leaping for the cliches, but if these people exist, they will be reported on.
A few years ago, I lived in an apartment that was on the route for the local Gay Pride Parade (which for a few years was held on my birthday - fun fun fun!) I saw most of 'em, then noticed during the news that the Gay Dads, the Gay Military Vets, the Gay Really Good Barbers, even the Really Gay Las Vegas Tiger-Keepers/Entertainers were never shown. It ain't a big surprise to anyone that it works this way - that newspapers will always take the demonstrator with the black hood and the molotov cocktail in his hand and make him their coverboy. But I saw the Gay Dads, the Gay Military Vets, et. al., and thousands of other people did too. If you don't get the good press, at least you've made yourself seen.
I'm a bit torn. I'm the last guy to champion crap like PrimeTime Live, but I can also see the reasons why it came out looking like it did (besides demographic ones). It was a lot easier spending several years reporting on people blowing each other up in places most people couldn't find on a map, much less pronounce, than it would be giving a totally impartial account of the adult industry. Both of the huge stories on television that I can remember have focused on the fringe. Given the content of that fringe, is anyone surprised? When I was growing up, a friend of mine used to tell stories based on that "Faces of Death" tape. What's in the porn store (or on Fox, for that matter, though they're usually not topless) puts "man gets attacked by bear" to shame."
