Gene Ross has an article running on his site that I’m trying to decipher. That’s kind of what I’ve decided I do: I decipher stuff; mostly porno stuff. And that doesn’t mean the way I decipher this porn stuff is actually the way it is, it’s just my deciphering take on the shit.
Gene’s article concerns Heatwave Productions, KSEX Radio , and a couple of sex performers, Flexx and Sierra. Right off the bat, the first sentence includes a mystery line. i.e., it might be a bit of a mystery to some of you reading it.
Gene reports: “Heatwave Production shoots a lot of black vids [for very obvious reasons].”
JimmyD sez: Without calling anyone a dumbfuck out there, the “very obvious reasons” might escape you… but they don't escape me. And since deciphering is what I do, I’ll pull out my auto-deciphering kryptopornographicizer and try and sort this one out.
As a veteran pornographer, the most obvious “obvious reason” that comes to my mind (which explains why a company might suddenly decide to shoot a lot of black vids) is that they do so because, for the most part, black flicks are cheaper to shoot yet still sell for the same money. In the Jizz Bizz, black-themed videos are often categorized as “specialty videos” along with mature women stuff, midget movies, and fat girl flicks. Specialty videos are almost always, as a rule, cheaper to shoot for more reasons than the fact that they are usually shot cheaply. And before someone decides they want to shoot the messenger over all this, try and remember I’m just reporting the way things are. I didn’t invent this shit and I don’t necessarily subscribe to the racism that obviously inherent in it.
Man, I feel like I’m opening up a can or worms with this one.
Anyway…
JimmyD, why are black vids cheaper to shoot, you ask?
Well, at the risk of sounding callous and politically-incorrect, black-themed videos are often cheaper to shoot because black talent often works for less. That’s certainly not always the case for all black performers, but in a general sort of way, it happens to be true. Many black women will work for one-third (or more) less than what a comparable white chic costs; the same holds true for many of the guys. And let’s remember what we’re talking about here: when I use the word “work” it’s a substitute for the word “fuck.”
I’m not just guessing about this stuff. I’ve personally shot a fair number of scenes with black talent. I know what the black talent was routinely paid by the producers. And for the most part, they were paid a significant amount less than comparable white performers. There’s a lot of reasons which would explain this situation, but that would be the subject of a whole other article (which I might decide to write at some point… assuming I’m of a mind to continue opening up cans of worms.)
Gene continues: “And last night the company got more than its share of promotional hype from Flexx and Sierra on their Ksex radio show, Ebony Nights. Noting that Heatwave was going to realize even more of an upswing in back vids, Flexx gave kudos to company owner, Gabor. "He's all fired up," said Flexx.
jimmyD sez: I’m sure he is. Whenever porn company owners can sell their wares for the same amount of money, and have it cost less to make, they tend to get “all fired up.”
Gene continues: “Sierra said it was nice to see a company stepping up its black product. Flexx agreed and said you have to respect someone willing to do that. "I wish I knew the details on what their entire attack or campaign is going to be. But the information I did get is about their new lines."
Flexx noted that some of the new lines will be directed by black female performers including Monique. Flexx said word on the street also is that Lil' Ass might have her own line as well. Flexx said he'd like to see even more female directors because most of porn is from the male perspective, anyway. "I think women have just a different eye towards filming sex," he noted. Sierra's only problem with that is if the product goes too soft with the "bullshit stuff".
"But I don't think it's going to go that way," she added. Flexx agreed and said you need something that's strong enough for a man, yet made for a woman. "It's like Secret deodorant." Flexx concedes that men for the most part will shoot too rough with not enough angles, implying that most sex vids lack the necessary visual stimuli. "I notice in a lot of films I see a lot of close-up shots. Close-up is good but can we slide back? I want to see a woman. I want to see her reactions. I want to see her titties bouncing up and down. I want to see the ass jiggling. The juices and the penetration are nice, but..."
jimmyD sez: I happen to agree with Flexx on what constitutes “visual stimuli.” I like seeing the whole woman myself. Gyno-shots, i.e., all the genital close-ups, tend to look more clinical than sexy to me. But I guess that’s a personal thing.
Gene continues: “Flexx noted that some of the lines coming out are [the sensitively-titled] Pull My Hair and Call Me Stupid and Anal Divas in Latex. Flexx said he liked that titled because it touches at least three bases. "I don't know what to expect from that and that's what makes it more interesting." Other projected series include Gangsta Bang, Ghetto Hos and Brown Sugar. For her tastes, Sierra said she'd like to see dirty movies but with quality titles. "Is it just a male-thing or could we have some better titles?" She did like Anal Divas in Latex as long as it keeps true to the title. Flexx went so far as to describe Heatwave being "an unsung hero" in the industry. "Everybody knows about Video Team."
jimmyD sez: “Gangsta Bang, Ghetto Hos and Brown Sugar,” now there’s some new and original titles for black-themed videos.
Gene’s article concludes: “ Sierra, who has worked for Heatwave and has positive things to say about the company, said if there's a wacky title and it has a bunch of black folks in it, chances are it's a Heatwave title.”
jimmyD sez: Actually, if there’s a whacky title and it has a bunch of black folks in it, chances are it’s a low-end, cheaply-produced, black-themed porn flick. Anyone waiting to see Wicked Pictures do a black version of “Euphoria,” or to see Digital Playground put out “Black Island Fever,” are not advised to hold their breath.
