One of my mainstream touts sent over an interesting tid-bit from the world of that other entertainment business on the other side of the hill.

A small classified in today's "Daily Reporter" advertises for the following position:

"Leading Adult Programming and Video Company, Jill Kelly Productions, Seeks DIRECTOR OF PUBLICITY. Must have general PR experience. Please FAX resume and salary requierments (310) 274-5121"

I'm thinking JKP doesn't consider any of the XXX industry's current plethora of publicists adequate to the job. But that little extrapolation ain't what interested me about this. What interested me is that this is yet another example of the jizz biz's current preoccupation with mainstream crossover.

There's only one reason to go to mainstream Hollywood looking for a publicist: To take advantage of that publicist's contacts. And why is that? Well, don't ya know? Pornography is teetering on the edge of mainstream acceptance. At least that's what a lot of us here keep telling ourselves.

Personally, I'm not sure that's such a good thing. Porn is built on the allure of being, to some degree, taboo. It strains against the social grain. It's a vice. And people love a good vice. The more it becomes a socially accepted diversion, the more it will lose its bootleg appeal. And I'm not so sure that would be so good for business.

But I guess smarter people than me know what they're doing. I'm just a little concerned that as Hollywood embraces porn in a bigger and bigger way, they'll decide the first thing they need to do is get rid of the pornographers, and then I'll be out of a freaking job. And I'm getting too damn old to start a new career as a fry cook or a used car salesman. You think I'm being paranoid? Well, it looks like a bunch of XXX publicists might be out of work if what JKP is doing represents some kind of trend and the trend continues.

I guess I'm just being selfish.
