There’s a lot that’s likeable in this flick; there’s also a fair amount that’s a bit annoying and occasionally cheesy. But then again, if it didn't have some annoying and cheesy elements, it wouldn't be a porno, right?
So you might first ask, what did you like about this flick, jimmyD? Well, I really liked much of the camera work. There are lots of quick little pushes and pulls that punctuate the dialogue and the interaction between the characters. Nice. And unlike Joone’s “Island Fever 2,” this flick was either shot in ‘letterbox’ mode or the shots were framed (while in 4:3 aspect ratio) so that they ended up properly composed for a 16:9 aspect ratio mask added in post. I’m thinking I’m pretty sure Robby shot with the camera in 16:9 mode. The movie is lit film-style with a lot of contrast--which I like--and there’s great use of color. Robby’s not afraid to make good use of shadow unlike the majority of shooters in this biz who seem to be always shooting stuff that’s lit like a sitcom. I also loved the girls, especially Jesse Jane who is as fine as frog’s hair. And I’m not ashamed to say that Jana Cova gives me a freakin’ chubby.
RobbyD obviously watches a lot of movies and he seems to like to mimic stuff he’s seen that, I’m guessing, he thought was pretty cool. I noticed little cinematic nods to a number of different films like “Jacob’s Ladder,” and more. And it’s not that he’s ripping off some mainstream movie we’ve all seen—like others sometimes do—but rather he borrows little bits that make his work all the more entertaining.
In a nutshell, this movie is about a crippled guy (Eric Masterson) who needs Lofstrand crutches to get around. He makes a deal with the devil (Evan Stone), which enables him to shed the crutches, get laid, but unfortunately age rather quickly. That’s it pretty much. I’d provide more detail but I don’t want to ruin it for anyone.
Ok, time for some shit I found a tad annoying. First off, Evan Stone is more than a little over-the-top in his portrayal of the devil. I’m not saying a comical devil doesn’t work. But portraying Satan as the comic relief actually takes more acting chops than playing him as a dark character. I think it was Jimmy Cagney who, on his deathbed, said, “Dying is easy. Comedy… that’s hard.” And portraying a character who is the ultimate “heavy” in a funny, comical way is no easy chore. Even Al Pacino resisted going for too many satanic laughs in the film, “Devil’s Advocate.” Unfortunately, Stone will need way more acting classes to make this kind of characterization work; but then, maybe Pacino would as well.
Although for much of this movie I liked the use of all the cartoon sound effects, sometimes I thought there were overused. Also guys, while it’s nice to see a porn flick that tries to make good use of sound effects on its soundtrack, you still need someone who knows what the fuck they’re doing to properly mix this shit—Dolby or no freaking Dolby.
A lot of love was put into the post-production of this flick, and it mostly all works in a very entertaining way. But like the overuse of some of the Toon Town sound effects, the Super 8 mm film treatment effects can also wear thin after a while. I’m not saying this very MTV effect ain’t cool, but perhaps if it were used more sparingly its cool factor would have been increased. But then, that’s just me and I’m sure a lot of people would disagree.
All in all this is another entertaining porn-outing for RobbyD. Like his “Suite 101” Robby pays a lot of attention to character and detail... oh yeah, and the sex as well. He has a wry sense of humor and it generally plays well on the screen. The sex, which I really haven't said anything about yet, is generally good—although the sex scenes seem overly long sometimes. And unlike many of porn’s feature directors, I’m guessing Robby doesn’t leave the set for the craft services table when its time to shoot the sex scenes.
Nice job, bro!
