jimmyd _writes "This from the Houston Chronicle: “AUSTIN -- Two high school health textbooks that passed the initial state review process earlier this month now are being criticized for being so focused on abstinence that they fail to include state-mandated information on contraception.”

If you don’t want to take the time to read the entire article, I’ll give you the JimmyD short version: The books are void of any reference at all regarding barrier protection; in other words, no mention of condoms. I guess its no small wonder the State of Texas has the nation's highest teen birth rate (according to the National Vital Statistics Report, based on 2002 data).

“Hey Debbie Sue! Ya think we ought’a talk to the young’ns about them rubber things?”

“Hell no, Jasper. We sure as heck didn’t need ‘em. And lookit what it got us-- ten young cowpokes and cowpokettes to keep up with the chores! I ain’t about to talk about them Godless things to our God-fearin’ litter. What would GeeDubya say?”

Here’s some wisdom from the textbooks: “Holt, Rinehart and Winston's "Lifetime Health" lists 10 steps for students to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases. The use of latex condoms is not one of them. Students are advised, however, to get plenty of rest.”

Hmm. I guess we could implement that in the jizz biz. Forget condoms and testing, let’s just tell performers to get more rest.

The tail-end of the article is the best. “Cathie Adams, president of the Texas Eagle Forum, a self-described pro-family group, praised the publishers for consulting with interested organizations before submitting their books to the education agency. She said that abstinence-only for teens is "very much in keeping with policies from the White House, as well as policies that are wanted by parents."

I love that part about the books keeping with the abstinence policies of the White House.

What planet are these people from?

Here's another bit from the Alamo state: According to Yahoo News, "The Republican Party of Texas affirms that the United States of America is a Christian nation, and the public acknowledgment of God is undeniable in our history," reads the plank in the party's 2004 platform, which was recently adopted."

So go ahead. Vote for our Texas President. But if you're a Jew, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Hindu, an atheist, or anything other than a Christian, don't be surprised if your quality of life in this Christian Nation goes suddenly downhill.
